Ways to get involved this Earth Day

Ways to get involved this Earth Day

Well, it’s that time of the year again! Wondering about some ways to get involved this Earth Day? We’ve got you covered. And even though we should appreciate our Earth every day, let’s take some time to go the extra mile this year.

Pick up trash!

Besides the crocuses, tulips, and daffodils that bloom here and there, it seems that our waste has come to reappear. From now on, we can no longer rely on the beautiful layer of white snow to mask our ugly habits. This year’s spring cleaning kick-off is Earth Day (even though we say it and repeat it, it’s every day that we should do our eco-responsible actions)!

Put on your running shoes and become a fan of plogging. This trend emerged a few years ago, combining physical fitness and eco-responsibility. If you’re not a fan of jogging (we won’t judge), then it’s time to launch your career as an organizer and rally your family, friends, and neighbors for a big spring clean-up event. Don’t worry – you can walk.

Practice Sustainable Fashion

Why should you practice sustainable fashion? We’re glad you asked!

  1. Environmental impact: The fashion industry is known to have a significant impact on the environment. By practicing sustainable fashion, you can reduce your carbon footprint, minimize waste, and help preserve the planet’s resources.
  2. Social impact: Sustainable fashion also has a positive impact on the people involved in the production of clothing. By supporting sustainable and ethical fashion practices, you are promoting fair labor practices, safe working conditions, and fair wages for garment workers.
  3. Economic impact: Practicing sustainable fashion can also have economic benefits. By choosing to purchase from sustainable fashion brands, you are supporting local businesses and artisans, who often use traditional and environmentally-friendly methods to produce clothing.

This Earth Day, the ECO team put together a clothing drive with the Kahanoff Centre to donate to The Mustard Seed in Calgary! It was great to see so many donations by the various organizations in the building.

City Nature Challenge

This one’s for our local Calgarians! The City of Calgary is partnering with the City Nature Challenge, back for its fifth consecutive year! You’re invited to join your fellow citizen scientists to shatter the goal of 10,000 observations during the challenge. It’s easy to do and your observations have a real-world impact as the data is open and shared across the world!

Explore anywhere in Calgary and showcase our city’s biodiversity! Check out this video to learn more.

Look for nature in your yard, neighborhoods around the city, and local parks from April 28 – May 1, 2023. Take photos of wild organisms such as plants, fungi, insects, birds, and mammals! Upload your photos to iNaturalist by May 7 to help boost Calgary’s participation in the global City Nature Challenge competition.

EarthDay.ca has many green Earth Day activities this year! One of our favourites is the Earth Day t-shirt, designed in collaboration with a local brand to support the greening of Canada. For every t-shirt sold, a tree will be planted across the country as part of the Tree Planting Relay.

Earth Day Network

Now you’re set!

We hope you feel a little more inspired on how you can make a difference. Big or small – every action counts. What will yours be this year?
