EYC Internship Program

Funded through Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Science Horizons Program, the Environmental Youth Corps (EYC) Internship Program gives eligible employers who work in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), up to 50% of an intern’s salary (up to $15,000) for new full-time environmental jobs.

With over $7.0M in funding for 2016, this program helps businesses grow their teams and provide meaningful environmental jobs for young professionals.

We are now accepting Phase 2 applications for the 2016 EYC program.

Am I eligible?

Note: To be eligible for the program you must meet all of the requirements below. No exceptions to the eligibility requirements will be made.

Employers (Hosts)


  • Offering a full-time, permanent position
  • Providing an environment-related position in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
  • Planning to hire a new employee (the intern cannot be an existing employee)
  • Canadian owned, Canadian subsidiary, Municipal Government Department, or Provincial Government Department
  • Intend to lead an environmental career related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
  • 30 years of age or younger
  • Canadian citizen, landed immigrant, or refugee status
  • Eligible to work in Canada
  • Graduated from a post-secondary institution
  • Able to work in a full-time, permanent position within the next 2 months
  • Unemployed or underemployed
  • Have not participated previously in a federal youth employment or education program
  • Not currently employed as a paid employee at the host organization
  • Not a family member of the host organization’s directors or senior officers

What roles are eligible?

To be eligible for funding the role must be a full-time permanent position and have a positive environmental impact.

Examples of eligible roles related to:


  • Research assistant to collect historical data, run models, and assess climate change impacts
  • Environmental coordinator determining and implementing best management practices for sustainable farming
  • Lab technician analysing water samples from sites to determine the contamination levels.
  • Technology:

  • Software designer to create smart grid technologies
  • GIS analyst focused on animal movements in Northern Canada
  • Engineering:

  • Design engineer to develop environmental monitoring equipment for greenhouse gases.
  • Energy Engineer to identify and quantify the opportunity for projects involving Demand Response, efficiency, renewable technologies, management and operating improvements to major energy using equipment.
  • Mathematics:

  • Home Energy Modeller to calculate thermal performance of building with a goal of recommending and implementing energy efficient options.
  • How does the process work?

    EYC Internship Process
    We’ll review an application and email a candidate within 10 business days with their status (approved, pending or declined).

    Once a host has found an intern, they will contact us and make sure that their candidate also applies to the program and receives approval. When both parties are approved, the host will contact us so that we can complete the match.

    After you and your host are matched, we’ll send a host contract, intern contract, Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) form, and Participation Information Form to start the internship and specify wage subsidy payments. Interns need to sign and send the intern contract and Participant Information Form (PIF) back. Hosts need to sign and send the host contract, EFT form and void cheque.

    What documentation is required?

    After you and your host are matched, we’ll send a contract, Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) form, and Participation Information Form to start the internship and specify wage subsidy payments. Interns need to sign and send the intern agreement and Participant Information Form (PIF) back. Hosts need to sign and send the contract agreement and EFT form.

    Throughout the internship, you’ll need to provide Intern and Host Reports, and salary documentation by all scheduled due dates. We require this information before we can pay the host wage subsidy installments.

    The EYC Internship Team may also conduct periodic monitoring calls and site visits.

    Note: If we do not receive this documentation from you within 2 weeks of the due dates, your internship will be revoked.

    Are you able to make exceptions?

    The eligibility requirements are set by the government funding body and not by ECO Canada. No exceptions to the requirements will be made.


    Host: A host is an eligible employer, who works in or on projects in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, and is creating a new full-time environmental job.

    Intern: An intern meets the eligibility requirements and is ready to enter the environmental workforce. The intern is prepared to transition into a full-time environmental job upon completion of the internship.

    Permanent Role: A permanent role means the intern is an employee at the organization — not on contract, not a short-term hire, summer student, co-op student or intern in the traditional sense. The intention is for you as the host organization to keep your intern on as a long-term employee when the program is completed.

    Full-time: On a weekly basis, a full-time employee is considered to be about 37.5-40 hours per week.

    EYC Internships typically last until March 31, 2017 and are intended to lead to permanent employment. To be considered, your interns start date must be within 30 days of being approved.

    Information for Interns

    Find meaningful environmental jobs.

    Apply for pre-approval to become an intern in our EYC Internship Program. Once you’ve been pre-approved, you’ll need to find an eligible employer to host your internship. This employer must also apply for and receive approval to participate in the program.

    The internship starts once you and your host have received approval, been matched, and provided all final contracts and salary documentation.
